What Should Student Eat While Studying at University?

No Junk Food

What do students usually eat? What is quick and cheap to cook or buy: fast food, sandwiches, dumplings, pies, chocolate bars, ready-to-cook food, etc. In addition, students always do not have enough money. And saving on food will almost certainly result in problems in the future. The fastest one can be excess weight. In order not to admit this, it makes sense to follow certain rules.

For the normal functioning of the brain, and the entire growing young organism, “proper” food is needed. What is it – the proper nutrition of students? The lack of the necessary vitamins and minerals affects not only the general well-being of the student but also the ability to absorb material, to concentrate. Furthermore, mental work spends a lot of energy. And if one remembers the student’s rhythm of life, lack of sleep, emotional and psychological stress (especially during exams), it becomes clear why students do not pay attention to proper nutrition.

The student must eat three or four times a day. Do not justify yourself with the occupation. Irregular intake of food is most often a consequence of laziness, and not of a loaded schedule. The process of food intake needs time: sit down and calmly eat without hurrying and distracting.

To begin let us define a stop-list of dishes which you should forget about or limit their consumption as much as possible if you want to keep your health.

Enemies of Health

  1. Ready-to-cook food and instant noodles are convenient and practical, but this is not healthy food. Moreover, it is harmful. Avoid such products;
  2. The same applies to fizzy drinks and chocolate bars. They are of little avail, bring a lot of harm and no saturation;
  3. Chips and crackers are enemies. There is almost nothing natural in them, and eating only dyes and flavoring additives is the right way to the gastroenterologist;
  4. Do not abuse coffee and energy drinks. If you really want to cheer up, then drink natural coffee, but no more than 4-5 cups a day.

General Recommendations

  1. Drink the liquid. For a day, you should drink 1,5-2 liters;
  2. Do not hurry. Even in the kindergarten, we are taught to chew food well, but few people in daily life follow this rule. Well chewed food is digested faster and better absorbed, so you should eat less, but chew it well;
  3. Eat fish, nuts, drink cocoa. These products are useful for those whose activities are related to mental work;
  4. Do not starve. A growing organism needs energy, and a lack of money is not always an excuse for a hungry student.

Time to Figure It Out

Healthy Food

Now let us take a closer look at the diet for students.

In the morning, you need to stock up energy. So, the student’s breakfast should be tasty and energetically rich. Remember – everything you eat in the morning, your body will digest and imbibe maximally. A heavy breakfast will push away the feeling of hunger that occurs in the middle of the day. It will give you the opportunity to sit until the end of classes without experiencing a strong sense of hunger. The student’s breakfast is a springboard for the whole day. What to eat for breakfast?

Firstly, as you wake up, drink half a glass of plain water – this will help your stomach to wake up and prepare for food. A good breakfast will be porridge, beans, pasta. If the porridge is made with whole grains – it is just wonderful. This breakfast will serve as a good supplier of the right carbohydrates for the body, and the energy from such a meal can be enough for the whole day. Fruits and vegetables will also be good. Such a breakfast is the basis of the right diet for students.

The student’s lunch is a non-permanent and badly predicted concept. Often a student does not have lunch as such. Therefore, you can prepare in advance and take something with you. Many take sandwiches with sausage – not the best option. Instead of sausage, it is better to boil the meat beforehand. Believe, to buy raw meat and boil or bake will not be more expensive than buying sausage of unknown quality, but certainly healthier and safer.

For a sandwich, a whole grain bread is best. Also, take vegetables – cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers. If you are sure of your university canteen, do not hesitate to go there for lunch. Take a portion of a low-fat first course, boiled or stewed meat or fish with vegetables for the second.

The student’s dinner is the most difficult time for proper nutrition. On the one hand, if breakfast and lunch were weak, then by evening the student is well hungry. On the other hand, the evening is the time when students actively communicate with each other, go to visit, cook, etc. Nevertheless, the correct dinner of the student – eggs, cottage cheese, fish dishes, vegetables. You can prepare a vegetable salad or eat some fruits. Gatherings with tea, cookies and cakes should be postponed for the morning time.

Late heavy dinner can lead to insomnia and pain in the stomach. Moreover, such a dinner will prevent a proper breakfast and, therefore, can adversely affect the whole next day. It is difficult for students to follow the advice to “have dinner no later than 7 P.M.”, but try not to eat at least three hours before bedtime is quite realistic.

As for snacks, it is better to eat less, but more often. Students can have significant breaks between breakfast and lunch or between lunch and dinner. Proper nutrition of students must take into account the so-called snacks. Otherwise, you can break into unhealthy food, justifying yourself that this is a special case and the last time in general. You can have a snack with fruits, nuts, yogurt. It will dull the feeling of hunger, if it arose, and replenish the energy necessary for learning.

We gave the main provisions for the proper nutrition of students. However, do not forget that this diet for students is just one of many illustrations. The best option is to create your own diet, adapted to your schedule and needs. Of course, during the session or when preparing for the exams it is difficult to follow rules of the proper nutrition. Notwithstanding, it is enough to understand its main principles and accustom yourself to this, then even the education itself will be given to you more easily.

Bad Memory Is Not a Vindication

Many students in problems with studies blame only their “short memory”, which literally refuses to perceive valuable information. The situation is ordinary, but you cannot always refer to such health problems, you need to somehow train and develop your memory. Of course, this should be done in the childhood, but if the problem has worsened only in the student times, training and prevention will also not interfere.

Causes of Bad Memory

My Memory Is So Bad

Before talking about solving this global problem in the student’s life, it is required to find the main reason, the so-called “root of evil.” The fact is that such a phenomenon does not arise from scratch, but is preceded, as a rule, by certain factors. That is just about these irritants worth talking about in more detail:

  1. The chronic fatigue. Since the student learns a lot, sleeps late and wakes up early, the cause of memory loss can be an eternal lack of sleep, a disturbed daily routine, improper regime, increased mental and physical stress, beriberi;
  2. The stress. If the student tries to “pull up the tails” and constantly reads the textbooks, but does not remember anything, the problem is obvious. The fact that his nervous system is in a stage of increased activity, and an imperceptible state of stress gradually worsens memory, and also provokes certain health problems;
  3. Pernicious habits. It is no secret that many students smoke and systematically abuse alcohol. This problem is a scourge of modern times, especially as smoking, alcohol and drugs reduce concentration, break memory, completely change the student’s mind and not only;
  4. Taking sedatives. Some modern students, for example, begin to take nootropics and even tranquilizers during a regular session against a background of increased nervousness. Such strong medicines, as is known, have a depressing effect on the nervous system, so memory functions noticeably weaken, absent-mindedness and forgetfulness appear;
  5. Increased anxiety. If you live constantly in this dangerous state, then the thoughts are confused, and most of the useful information very quickly slips past the ears, never lingering in the mind of a person;
  6. The rush. If a student starts to fuss, get nervous, run from side to side and simultaneously grab a few cases, then all the fresh thoughts from the head finally disappear, leaving distraction, forgetfulness.

Well-Known Types of Memory

Bad memory can always be trained, but for this, the first thing to do is to determine what kind of memory is present in a particular case. For this you can safely use the following characteristics:

  • If information immediately skips past consciousness, then memory is “immediate”;
  • If new information is held in consciousness for up to 30 seconds, the memory is considered “short-term”;
  • If a certain fact is stored in memory for a needed period of time, and then it is forgotten, then in this case it is already a matter of “sliding memory”;
  • If one remembers certain information for years, then one has a “long-term” memory.

Having determined your type, you can draw conclusions about the prevailing problem, if such is, of course, present in the organism of the student.

What to Do with Bad Memory?

Memory can be trained, but do it not one day and not one month, but regularly, taking for a useful habit for the rest of your life. There are several simple exercises that contribute to the concentration of attention, which means – increase the ability to remember individual actions, events, facts, life moments:

  • Motivation. When a student prepares for the exam, he has to memorize a lot of new information. Sometimes consciousness fights against such a scientific flow, and numerous figures, complex definitions and new topics are not remembered in any way. Here, the motivation comes to the rescue, that is the final result, to which it is clearly necessary to strive. For students, this is a high average score and a scholarship in a new semester, so that each time forgetting new information, it is worthwhile to remind yourself, with what such absent-mindedness threatens in the future;
  • The mindfulness. Memory may deteriorate due to increased inattention. Many things a person does mechanically, that is, without noticing it, for example, turns off the light in the bathroom, puts the car in the garage, closes the front door. Then he/she begins to worry that he/she did not do something, because he/she simply does not remember when and how it happened.

To prevent such situations, it is recommended controlling all your actions by voice, that is, to say out loud what you are doing, how and for what. Maybe you will not remember when you did it, but your own voice will ring for a long time in your ears, calming you down;

  • Logical connections. This is an excellent method of quality memory training, which also develops logic, thinking, attention, intelligence. A person must learn to build logical series in memory, beginning with the final situation. If something is forgotten, it is important to remember the day of the week, the ambiance, time, situation – any little things.

Such suggestive thoughts will restore the necessary events in memory, their sequence and final result. If you repeat this simple exercise on a regular basis, very soon memory performance will please you with its stability and reliability;

  • Associations. This is another technique, how to train memory. To implement the idea, you need to remember the situation, while connecting abstract thinking, for example, what was in the situation, and what could be if …

For someone such a representation allows to remember real events, reliably put them in the memory for an extended period of time;

  • The Bad memory can arise due to constant fuss, which distracts a person from a certain occupation, kind of activity. Yes, and his/her absent-minded nature, in this case, acts against him/her. That is why, carrying out some work, it is important to repeat its purpose, so that not only the process itself is remembered, but the final result, which we had to achieve;
  • Crosswords. The most common crossword puzzles perfectly train memory, and this phenomenon is very easily explained. First, the words are often repeated, and the person remembers them mechanically. Secondly, visual memory is perfectly trained, as a reaction to similar sentences, phrases, questions. Simply put, it is recommended solving crossword puzzles every day, and in a week’s time, progress will be obvious.

Each student chooses his own method of remembering information, but as practice shows, the method of associations works 100%. So you can memorize any topic, prepare for the upcoming exam, and most importantly – to pass through the mind the information received.

Opinion of Doctors

Doctors

Many doctors have often faced the problem of memory impairment at school and college age. Patients forgot the information received a minute ago, because it seemed incomprehensible and completely meaningless. This is the answer to the main question: if the facts that are complex to perception are explained in a simple and accessible language, then problems with remembering, for example, a new topic will certainly not arise.

If the memory is bad, then you need to reconsider your usual diet, including fresh vegetables and fruits, greens and vitamins. Also, valuable minerals and microelements are needed: they improve the condition and functionality of the cerebral cortex and stabilize the work of the nervous system. To select vitamin therapy is better individually with a qualified specialist, but in proper nutrition, give preference mainly to natural ingredients.

There is an opinion that walnuts contribute to memory improvement. So, this component should definitely be included in the daily menu and should be eaten between the main meals every day.

It is also important to understand that avitaminosis can worsen memory quality at any age, and this condition should be avoided especially during the autumn-winter period.

Of course, to improve memory, you will have to give up all bad habits, go in for sports and more often be in the open air. It is such walks in nature that enrich the cells of the cerebral cortex with vital oxygen, which means that they improve the memory reserves and the susceptibility of new information.

The best and most productive are moderate cardio-operations, but it is also important not to forget about elementary exercises for improving memory.

Experts are sure that if a person regulates his daily routine, completely eliminates stress and increased nervousness, starts eating right, throws away all unnecessary information and superfluous problems, then the memory improves on its own. So often happens, otherwise, you will have to resort to a specialist’s advice.

Within the framework of this article, you learned about what to do in the case of the bad memory. In general, advice to all students: more thoughts about studying, and then the memory will certainly not deteriorate. And getting new information is better in portions during the semester, and not two nights before the exam.

Do Not Do This. The Night before the Exam

As you know, the exam is an important stage in the student’s life, which must be overcome, and worthy. Of course, you need to gain profound knowledge of the subject, but it also does not hurt to trust the student’s signs. Here are a few simple truths.

Say No to Alcohol

No Alcohol

Some students, in order to relieve stress, prefer to party well before the exam. In this case, it is not about walking in the fresh air to renovate your head. Most likely, this is a noisy party with friends and alcoholic drinks. Drinking alcohol before passing the exam is not recommended for several reasons:

  • In the morning after the feast, there is a terrible fume, which certainly will not please the examining teacher. The teacher understands that the student did not prepare all night long, but in a known way “took off stress”. Accordingly, his knowledge of the subject is not deep enough, and the lack of interest is clearly on the face. In addition, the smell of fumes irritates, provokes a headache and additional questions on the topic on the part of the examiner;
  • The alcohol, which was drunk on the eve of the exam, dulls the work of the central nervous system, disrupts the work of somatic cells and concentration of attention, provokes increased drowsiness and inhibition of natural responses. It is unlikely that the teacher will assess such an inadequate state of his student with a high grade, at best it will be “satisfactory”, and at worst – the retake in an adequate state;
  • The only thing the student thinks about after a noisy binge is a sleep. He remembers nothing from the passed material on the subject, and the teacher’s questions provoke a sharp headache, a feeling of nausea and nervousness. Yeah, in this condition, you certainly will not pass the exam, besides, you can completely ruin the once-friendly relationship with the teacher.

The alcohol, in any case, is harmful to health, so do not sink grief and mentally prepare for the exam in this disastrous way. It is better to work on textbooks, and on the eve of the exam go to bed early and have a good night sleep. This is a wonderful sign, which increases the chances for a successful passing of the exam. And the problems are less, and the evaluation is higher, and the teacher is glad to such an exemplary student.

Studying the Night before the Exam Is Only Harmful

Many modern students believe that the night before the exam is enough to remember a colossal amount of information that regularly flew past the ears during the semester.

No, it is not true: fatigue in the morning will be unambiguously felt, but in the head, there will be a “porridge”, which is unlikely to help successfully pass the exam and keep a scholarship.

But what is the failure of this method of self-training? Let us start with the fact that the memory of a person perceives information only in batches, so its excess will still remain beyond the bounds of understanding. In addition, in the evening time the concentration of attention is noticeably reduced, therefore it is hardly possible to memorize something useful.

Also, it should be remembered that studying in the dead of night provokes chronic fatigue, which in the morning inhibits the natural reactions of the body, worsens memory, provokes passivity, prevents concentration.

That is why many scientists have proved that it is necessary to study the exam within a few days (ideally, throughout the whole semester), but do not stay up late on the last day before the exam, as many students like to do. All the same, such efforts are meaningless, and they will not raise the mark on the exam.

Before the Exam Do Not Drink Coffee and Soothing Pills

No Coffee

For many university students, the exam is the strongest stress for the body. That is why, in order to calm down a little, some students take sedatives without a doctor’s prescription. The effect, of course, will be, but which one in a particular case is unknown.

It is one thing if a student constantly drinks a sedative on the advice of a doctor and clearly controls the allowable dose; and quite another, when the reception of an unknown sedative was performed for the first time – as an experiment, so to speak.

In the latter case, the body’s response may be the most unpredictable, beginning with increased drowsiness and ending with a quiet snoring at the back desk. The student, in any case, needs his reactions and emotions, otherwise, the exam can be simply failed with indifference.

As for coffee, its effect on the student’s body is the opposite of sedatives. The drink tones and invigorates, makes you stay in a state of the drive. Such increased activity during the exam can also do harm, so it is desirable to refrain from any energy drinks, which, incidentally, harm the body, in particular, the work of the cardiovascular system.

Appearance of the Student

Before the exam, it is important to decide what to wear on such a crucial and important day. It is best to give preference to a strict classical style, which provides “black bottom – white top”.

This is the standard that should always be in the wardrobe of any student, as teachers, as you know, do not like fashionable youth trends, creativity, radical experiments with appearance.

Yes, by the way, it is not recommended on the eve of the exam to change your usual style, in particular, to dye your hair, do tattoos and piercings. The fact is that such changes are immediately evident and pose anxious thoughts. The teacher should have a clear conviction that the student was eagerly preparing for the upcoming session and was not distracted by all sorts of nonsense.

New things for the exam, too, is not the best variant to wear, as the energy of the “old wardrobe” will only contribute to the successful ending of the session, will provide a feeling of complete comfort.

It is very important that clothes do not squeeze the body and do not irritate emotionally, which only distracts on the exam. Very important is the so-called “psychological comfort”, which will help to morally tune in to the upcoming answers on the topic.

Advice to all students: do not focus on the signs, it is best to prepare for the exam in order to exclude the need for a retake.

Stop Wasting Time on the Internet

Strangely enough, but modern students perceive the Internet not as a source of knowledge, but as an entertainment environment in which you can “hang out” around the clock. On the one hand, such an interest can be understood, but on the other – and when to live a real life? Let us try to figure out together how to stop wasting time on the Internet? However, before answering this difficult question, let us find out why the world-wide web attracts the student of the university so much?

The Main Temptations of the Internet

Internet

Today, every first student does not imagine his/her life without a mobile phone and, of course, the Internet. Yes, the temptations are significant, and if the connection can be lost for a while, then the lack of a network becomes, as a rule, a problem of universal scale. What is it: the habit or already dependence?

It turns out that there is nothing complicated, and the reasons for the immense love of the Internet are trivial and quite obvious:

  1. Social networks. There is a category of students who all their time disappear in social networks, occupying not only the time of sleep but also money. From the outside, it seems that it is foolish to communicate with strangers under hidden avatars, but for some this kind of communication allows to be liberated as much as possible and to find virtual, but like-minded people;
  2. Computer games. This is the most dangerous category of students, because its representatives are fanatics of the virtual reality world, and exchanged it for a full life in the real They are not interested in events that occur in their lives, but new levels and non-existent opponents, on the contrary, manage to become the meaning of life. If such a person is not “reanimated” in a timely manner, then he/she will be completely lost to modern society;
  3. Forums. This is more a disease of female representatives, who have problems in intimate or family life. It’s much easier to ask advice from unknown nicks than to solve problems with the “hero of the fete,” so to speak. So there are virtual disputes and wrangling, which can drag on for several days. There is a dependence on women’s forums, which in the future is very difficult to cure;
  4. The work. This is a noble affair until the student-user becomes dependent on the world-wide web. There are known types of remote employment that make the virtual world a reality. This is usually copywriting, rewriting, and the work of a trader generally turns a student into a fanatic of the blue screen, so sometimes it is even dangerous. In addition, the phrase: “There is always more fish in the sea” still has not been canceled;
  5. Studies. Many students cannot tear themselves away from the Internet due to diligent studies. The fact is that they are so fixated in obtaining knowledge and desire to become the owner of the red diploma that they spend all their time in front of the monitor, in creative search, so to speak. Here a measure is important, otherwise, insulting nicknames will haunt until the very graduation.

So now it becomes quite obvious that most of the modern students do not represent their lives without an accessible world wide web, have made it a part of their daily life and have found quite obvious and justified arguments for such an act.

All this, of course, is very good, but when then to live? It is necessary to find time for the rest and the reality, which is not more boring than the virtual world if you look closely!

What Is Wrong with the Internet?

Pensive Man

Let us consider several situations that are the most common in the student’s life.

If a student spends most of his life on the Internet, and go to bed in the morning, then, accordingly, there cannot be any talk about the diligent study.

The permanent location at the monitor distracts from compulsory studies, reduces academic performance, increases absentmindedness, and in cases of some particularly desperate gamers provokes a feeling of aggression and irritation in terms of the world around.

When a student spends too much free time on the vastness of the world-wide web, he/she hardly has the desire and time for his/her personal life. Your eternal companions of life become a chair and a screen, no one will come to you to meet if you at least do not leave the house.

According to statistics, a person who spends more than seven hours at a computer monitor turns into a so-called “zombie”, that is, he begins to think narrowly, to have primitive views on life and constant dissatisfaction in reality. He is unlikely to find himself in this life, because all the goals are in the software, but not in the desire to develop and improve himself/herself.

Dependence on the Internet can be safely compared with heroin addiction, as the “patient” also needs another dose, and in its absence, begins a real withdrawal symptom.

However, the same “golden mean” is welcomed, which distinguishes the fan from the fanatic, and the inept person from the competent one. And anyway, a modern student should be able to do everything and master the basics of software too.

Eleven Ways to Support A Friends Book Release

In the week since my YA mystery, Trail of Secrets, was published, Ive engaged in a whirlwind of tweets, Facebook posts, blog appearances, and in-person visits to bookstores, libraries, tack shops, horse barns, etc. Im starting to realize I probably should have majored in marketing instead of English! Ive been overwhelmed with support from many friends, relatives, fellow writersparticularly a few close friends scattered across the country who have been hand-delivering my bookmarks to local riding stables and sharing my Facebook posts with their social networks. Im so grateful!

Still, people continue to ask me, What can I do to help? Well, the obvious answer is Buy the book! But going beyond that, Id like to re-share a portion of a post I read and posted a couple of years ago on WriterUnboxed.com by Chuck Sambuchino (editor of Writers Digest) on how to support an authors book release. Ive been using many of these strategies (especially number 6!) to help support the book releases of my fellow writers. The suggestions are so simple, yet effective, that I must share them. Hopefully, the good karma Ive been putting out there will come back to visit me in these next days and weeks!

To view the complete post from writerunboxed.com, click HERE.   I am sharing my favorite portion of his post below:

Anyone can support an authors book release by doing different things to help the book sell and get noticed. So, in no particular order, here are 11 things — some big, some small — that you can do to support a writer friend when their book comes out:

1. Buy their book. An obvious point, sure, but important nonetheless. Naturally, we must buy new copies of books, not used copies, for the sale to count and the author to get a royalty. So buy new. Heck, consider pre-ordering the book. Publishers pay attention to pre-orders to help get a sense of what titles are getting buzz and attention. Impressive pre-orders help the author.

2. Buy their book for others as a gift. Think of which friends and relatives would enjoy the book/novel. Buy it for them as either a birthday gift or holiday gift. You get to support your author friend and give cool gifts at the same time! Get copies signed if possible to make gifts special. Even people who dont read many novels will still take note if a gifted book is personalized and autographed.

3. Face the book out at bookstores. Simply rearrange a bookstore shelf so that your friends book faces out to make it much more noticeable. (The theme begins: Its all about getting noticed.)

4. When you actually read the book, read it where people can see it. Read it in public. Read it on the subway. Read it in the aisle seat of a plane. Read it on the deck of a cruise ship. After all, dont you find yourself looking at what others are reading when you pass by? I do! And if I see 3 different people in 3 different places reading the same book, will I start to investigate it out of curiosity? Yes. Its all about building public knowledge of something to the point where people are curious and discuss it.

5. Ask a bookstore employee where the book is located. When entering a bookstore, do not look for the book, even if you know exactly where it is. Go to the bookstore customer service clerk and ask them about the book. They will find it in their system and lead you to the book. My hope is that if several people do this at the same bookstore, then the employee(s) will begin to take notice of the title, wondering what all the buzz is about. If youre lucky enough that an employee finally picks it up and reads it, then they might put it in the Employee Picks section or refer it to people who come in and ask Whats something good I probably dont know about? or What book makes a good gift? Let bookstore employees help sell copies!

6. Leave a review on Amazon or BN.com or Goodreads or all. Reviews are still very important. Think about it. If you come by a new book and see it has 2.0 stars on Amazon, would you buy it? On some level, that silly rating does affect me and my decision — and my guess is that it affects you, too. So its crucial that, when you read a book and enjoy it, you leave a review on Amazon or BN.com or Goodreads or all. Those first 10-20 reviews really matter and can set a book on the right path. (Note: You can leave the same review on all sites to save time.)

7. Like the book on Amazon, or Like the authors Facebook Fan page, or both. I heard from a literary agent once that the more Likes a book had on its Amazon page, the more frequent it turned up in Amazons comparable titles elsewhere. Getting your personal friends to Like another friends page is an easy favor to ask, as it requires no money. (Heck, go do some good right now: Open this separate page and Like Brians Facebook page if you have a second.)

8. Reserve a copy at the library. An employee here at Writers Digest Books once told me that if all copies of a book are reserved from our county library before the title came out, the system has a way of noticing this popularity and marking the book as one for more orders. (Also: Use the bookstore method above and ask librarians about the book — simply to draw attention to it and get the title on the mind of staff.)

9. Attend the book release party (if there is one) and bring a warm body or two. This task isnt so much to help the author as it is to help the authors self-esteem. Its lonely to have a book release party or local signing with low attendance. If you already bought a copy, bring that book to be signed.

10. Spread news of the book through your social media channels. When the author mentions it on Facebook, share the news with your social circles and include a small note about what the book is and why they should buy it. In other words, spreading the word by saying My friend got published! is nice — but its better to say, This new book by my hilarious friend is a great gift for dads who are raising daughters. Laugh-out-loud-funny stuff for all fathers to enjoy! See how the second one targets people in a simple-yet-specific way? Do this kind of targeting when you spread the word via Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, or blogs.

11. If you have media contacts or know people of influence, arrange a connection. This is one of the best things you can do and probably the biggest way you can truly influence the life of the book and the success of the author. If youre married to the cousin of a local news personality, its exactly that kind of connection that serves as a great introduction between author and TV host. If you know a book reviewer at a newspaper in Boston, say so. If your old college buddy now runs the biggest reading club in all of Central California, try and help your author friends book be a future choice in that club. Utilize your network! Chuck Sambuchino

So select a few items off this list and help your writer-friends to succeed!  When your book gets published,  youll be glad you did.

Horsin Around ThursdaysEdmund Pickle Chin: A Donkey Rescue Story

Today Im taking a break from young adult novels to introduce a very special picture bookEdmund Pickle Chin:  A Donkey Rescue Story, co-authored by Clara Bowman-Jahn and Susan April Elwood. Im deviating slightly from my Thursday horse theme, too, as this picture book is about a donkey, not a horse. But Ive never met a horse-lover who doesnt also love donkeys! Not to mention, Im a sucker for animal rescue stories. Clara Bowman-Jahn is a talented author and former online critique group member of mine. Im so happy to help spread the word about her sweet and heartwarming book, which has been tested and approved by my very own children.

Summary:  Edmund Pickle Chin, A Donkey Rescue Story is based on a true story. Edmund is an abused donkey who is the first of many animals to call Evermay Farm, a small rescue in central Georgia, home. Susan, Edmund’s care giver in the story, not only gives the shy donkey the time and patience he needs but gives him a new name every day of the week. The title takes on one of those nicknames she so lovingly calls him. As Susan starts to take in new critters, Edmund finds himself changing. As his name grows, so does his trust and acceptance. Edmund soon learns that he is not only needed but wanted. This confused, frightened donkey’s life changes as he becomes a hero, a babysitter, and a companion to the other residents at Evermay Farm.
